The whole prospect of selling and sharing Tom’s pieces with a wider audience was something we never really considered until the Summer of 2017. Tom has always been artistic-through painting, drawing, and “creating” in general. But while he’d had some experience in carpentry, he hadn’t really jumped into woodworking. The interest had been there but opportunity hadn’t presented itself. Enter his father-in-law, who is an experienced woodworker in his own right. It only took one visit to the woodshop and Tom was hooked.
Tom took that guidance and fused it with his artistic background to just start experimenting...and the results were some very unique and incredibly cool pieces. Bowls, boxes, and Christmas ornaments were among his first outcomes. From time to time, Tom would gift one of his works for a special occasion or craft a custom order for a friend or family member. But for the most part, we kept everything he made and the “inventory” began to take over our home!
Finally in the Fall of 2017 I signed us up for a local craft fair with the intention of paring down some of the collection (and to offset some tool/materials purchases). Secretly, I also had an ulterior motive: to show Tom that people would love his work! The reception of Mountain Laurel Woodworks at this hometown event was overwhelmingly positive and things took off from there. This interest ignited our Facebook/Instagram pages as well as our Etsy shop and we were invited to sign up for additional events. We now have several retail partners which you can find below or HERE.
We’re loving meeting folks out in the region and learning how you’re using our products. It’s also been such an honor to create one-of-a-kind pieces from family homeplace lumber or find new ways to preserve precious heirlooms. We look forward to seeing you at events and shows throughout Kentucky. Come let us make something special for you!
Thank you for visiting,
Jen
